Greater Greenville Hockey Association (GGHA) Scholarship Program

The Greater Greenville Hockey Association (GGHA) is committed to making youth hockey accessible to as many families as possible. Our scholarship program provides financial assistance for player fees to eligible participants, fostering their involvement in the sport.

I. Eligibility & Guidelines

  • Eligible Players: Scholarships are available to players participating in the House and Travel Programs within the GGHA.
  • Exceptions for extenuating circumstances may be made at the discretion of the GGHA Board.
  • Age Groups: Players from Mite (8U+) to Midget (18U) are eligible.
  • Scholarship Amount: Players may request up to 50% of their total fees for the current season. Please note that scholarship awards are not guaranteed.
  • Mandatory Volunteering: Parents/guardians of scholarship recipients MUST complete mandatory volunteering for the GGHA organization during the season for which the scholarship has been awarded.
  • Volunteering Options Include: Scoresheet, music, clock, locker room monitor, coaching, game video streaming, and other approved roles.

II. Scholarship Consideration Criteria

Scholarships for player fees will be considered and granted based on the following criteria:

  • Availability of funds
  • Financial need of the parent(s) and child applicant
  • Academic record of the child applicant or a letter of recommendation from a school official
  • Special personal circumstances of parent(s) and child applicant
  • Number of years with the association
  • Player’s behavior history
  • No outstanding balance from prior year’s fees

III. Scholarship Policy & Deadlines

  • Scholarship Due Dates:
  • Round One: Applications are due by June 1. Scholarship awards will be issued on or before June 30.
  • Round Two: Applications will be accepted until August 31. Decisions for Round Two will be approved in the September board meeting, contingent on fund availability.
  • Late Applications: Applications for scholarships may be accepted after September at the discretion of the board for extenuating circumstances that may arise with players and families during the season.

Discount Policy: A player cannot receive more than one discount. Scholarships are separate from other GGHA discounts and cannot be combined.

IV. Required Application Documents

  • GGHA Scholarship Application Form
  • Verification of Economic Need
  • Prior year tax return (Form 1040, first to pages) as filed with the IRS.  Include business income if applicable.
  • If applicable, please submit proof of eligibility for government assistance in programs such as School Lunch Assistance or WIC.
  • Copy of most recent child applicant academic report card / letter from a school official
  • Explanation of any special personal circumstances

V. Submission & Confidentiality

  • Application Deadline: The general deadline for scholarship applications for the upcoming season is at the time of registration, but no later than August 31. If hardship occurs after this date within the season, you may still submit an application.
  • Documentation: The Scholarship Committee (consisting of GGHA board members) will retain all documentation submitted; therefore, please provide copies and keep your originals.
  • Review Process: The GGHA Board meets once each month. Applications will be reviewed at these meetings. You will be contacted if there are any questions regarding your application and notified as soon as a decision has been made.
  • Confidentiality: All application forms and information submitted will be kept strictly confidential by the Scholarship Committee.

United Heroes League Grants for Military Members

United Heroes League has paid over $500,000 in grants to help with local association fees. Many service members are in a “reserve” status until they are deployed, and have been affected by the economy like everyone else. This is a great way for United Heroes League to say THANK YOU to the families who give us so much.

Who’s Eligible?

United Heroes League provides equipment, camps, game tickets, and grants for association fees based on status and rank of military parent(s). All military branches are included and may apply:

Status:

  1. Family of Killed In Action
  2. Combat Wounded Purple Heart Recipient
  3. Currently Deployed
  4. Currently Serving
  5. Veterans (Honorably discharged Veterans who have deployed to a combat zone as defined by the Department of Defense or Veterans Administration.)
